With the evolution of modern lifestyles and the influence of industrialization, many traditional folk arts and crafts are experiencing both challenges and opportunities. While some face decline, others have found new paths to success. Liubian craftsmanship, for example, has made remarkable progress in the international market, becoming a powerful tool for rural communities to boost their income and improve their quality of life.
The 2nd Shandong Fine Arts & Crafts Home Furnishings Fair recently opened in Jinan, Shandong Province, showcasing a vibrant display of traditional crafts from across the province. At the event, visitors could see Zibo’s glass and ceramic art, Weifang’s kites and New Year pictures, Linyi’s Liubian, Jinan’s gourd sculptures, and even sun-dried crafts. Some lesser-known folk arts, such as black pottery, were also on display, drawing admiration from attendees who praised the creativity and beauty of the works.
During an interview, a local artisan named Ren Chunhua, known for her intricate paper-cutting skills, shared her concerns about the future of traditional crafts. She noted that while many people still learn the craft out of interest, fewer are choosing it as a career due to low income and limited growth opportunities. Most of her work now comes from exhibitions, which have become an essential source of income.
Similarly, other folk art industries like New Year picture painting, cloth art, and gourd sculpture are struggling to maintain their relevance. Liu Peizong, manager of the Shandong Dongying Taiji Folk Handiwork Workshop, explained that sales remain stable but largely depend on tourism. Rising labor costs have further complicated the situation, making it harder for small workshops to sustain themselves.
However, not all traditional crafts are facing decline. In recent years, several folk products have gained global recognition. For instance, Linyi’s Liubian wicker products have become popular overseas, especially in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Their natural and eco-friendly appeal has made them a hit among environmentally conscious consumers. A representative from Shandong Linyi Huaxingda Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. told the reporter that the demand for these traditional items is growing steadily.
Despite the challenges, folk arts and crafts continue to play a significant role in boosting rural incomes. According to Li Jiansheng, deputy director of the Economic and Information Technology Committee of Shandong Province, the arts and crafts industry employed nearly 1.5 million rural workers in 2009, with farmers earning over 8 billion yuan in processing fees annually. Looking ahead, Shandong plans to strengthen business connections through events like this fair, aiming to revitalize and promote traditional crafts in the region.
As the world becomes more connected, the survival and growth of traditional crafts depend on innovation, exposure, and support—ensuring that these cultural treasures continue to thrive in the modern era.
