1. Emerald Head

The term "head" in jadeite refers to its transparency and water content, often called the "water head." As the saying goes, "Traders look at the water head, while laymen look at the color." Many people overlook this crucial factor when purchasing jadeite. A high-quality jadeite appears crystal clear, with a watery and smooth texture, almost like glass. The best type is translucent ice jade, which is nearly completely transparent. This is known as the "glass species" and is highly valued. Medium-grade jade has moderate transparency, appearing slightly cloudy or "water-like," which is common in mid-range products. Lower quality jade is opaque, dull, and lacks luster.

2. Emerald Texture

Jade texture relates to both the structure and clarity of the stone. High-quality jade exhibits a fine, even grain and a smooth surface. It should feel moist, glossy, and refined. A well-structured jade not only looks good but also feels pleasant to the touch, enhancing its overall value and appeal.

3. Emerald Color

Emeralds come in a variety of colors, including green, colorless, white, purple, yellow, blue, red, black, brown, and gray. White is the most common and typically the least expensive. When evaluating jade, three key factors are considered: the brightness of the color, the depth of the shade, and the evenness of the distribution. Bright, rich colors that are free from dullness are considered top-grade. Uniform and natural color distribution is ideal, covering a wide area without visible inconsistencies. On the other hand, uneven or mixed colors can significantly reduce the value of the piece.

4. Emerald Processing

As the old saying goes, "Jade is not an instrument," meaning that it requires skilled craftsmanship to bring out its beauty. Excellent processing techniques enhance the value and aesthetic appeal of jade. High-end jade is usually hand-carved by experienced artisans, giving it a unique and refined look. In contrast, lower-quality jade is often machine-made, which may lack the detail and artistry found in handcrafted pieces.

5. Jade Clarity and Luster

Clarity refers to how clean the jade appears to the naked eye. It should be free from blemishes such as black spots, stone flowers, impurities, cracks, or other imperfections. Cracks are particularly damaging to the value of jadeite. If any cracks are visible under normal lighting, the value of the piece drops significantly. A clear, smooth surface with no visible flaws is essential for a high-quality jade piece.
