Compared to traditional quilts, seven-hole and five-hole cotton offer advantages such as softness, lightness, warmth, and ease of cleaning. However, many products labeled as 'seven-hole cotton' on the market are not 100% cotton and contain other materials. This has led to confusion among consumers who believe they are buying genuine cotton. According to experts from the China National Textile Association, when purchasing 'seven-hole' quilts, consumers should consider the season rather than just weight. A standard quilt weighs around three pounds and is suitable for indoor temperatures between 4°C and 12°C in winter, 12°C to 22°C in spring and autumn, and above 22°C for air-conditioned environments. Different manufacturers produce varying quality and prices, so choosing a reputable brand is recommended. Many consumers, like Mr. Ho from Taiyuan, are confused about what 'hole cotton' really means. He bought bedding in a mall and was unsure whether it was real cotton or not. Some salespeople claim the product is 100% cotton, but upon opening the package, the instructions reveal it contains 90% polyester and 10% cotton. The sales staff then quickly change their story, claiming only the outer cover is pure cotton. After investigating, the reporter found that many products labeled as 'seven-hole cotton' are actually mostly polyester inside, with only a small amount of cotton on the outside. Many consumers are misled into thinking they are buying cotton, only to later discover it's a chemical fiber product. This kind of labeling is considered misleading and conceptually confusing. Consumers often associate 'hole cotton' with natural white cotton, not realizing it refers to synthetic fibers with holes in their cross-section. These holes allow for better insulation and breathability, which is why more holes generally mean better performance. Experts suggest that the correct term should be 'seven-hole polyester fiber' instead of 'seven-hole cotton,' as the latter is deceptive. Industry insiders revealed that the term 'seven-hole cotton' was coined without proper research, but it gained popularity because people associate cotton with comfort and quality. When shopping for 'seven-hole' bedding, consumers should check both the filling and the fabric. Ensure the quilt is fully filled, the fabric is tight, and there’s no exposure of the inner fibers. A good quilt should feel soft, smooth, and return to its original shape when released. If it feels sticky, it may indicate poor-quality or mixed fillings. Also, check the overall flatness and even thickness of the quilt, especially the edges. Good stitching should be straight and consistent. Experts recommend checking the stitches by hand, measuring the spacing between them to ensure uniformity. While four-hole, seven-hole, and nine-hole fibers work on similar principles, seven-hole and nine-hole versions are more advanced and offer better comfort and fluffiness, though they come at a higher price.
