I still can't quite believe that S is going to turn eleven this month. It feels like just yesterday she was 2 1/2 years old, and I was starting this little pattern company. Over the years, she's grown up completely immersed in patterns, fabrics, and photo shoots. Recently, she mentioned to us that she wants to pursue photography as a career when she grows up. While she's always been involved in some way—she often plays around with the camera setup after every photo session, arranging shots, striking poses, and experimenting with styling—it will be fascinating to see if she seriously pursues this path later in life.
But enough about her future dreams for now—let’s talk about her latest creation, the Secret Agent Trench Coat in the Woodland Clearing print. She's been asking for a new trench coat ever since she outgrew her old one, which she adored.
When the design team at Kaufman reached out to ask if I wanted one of the Woodland Clearing fabrics to also be made into a coated laminate, I jumped at the chance. Coated fabrics are incredibly versatile and perfect for countless projects. Naturally, the first thing I wanted to create with this material was a trench coat for S.
I decided to go heavy on the topstitching for this jacket. It helps keep everything looking crisp and sharp, especially since working with laminates can sometimes be tricky. A walking foot made the process much easier, though. Other than that, I didn’t do anything too complicated—just followed the pattern and stitched away.
To give the inside of the jacket a touch of elegance without adding bulk, I used the turquoise floral print from the Woodland Clearing collection to create bias binding for the seam allowances. It didn’t take long at all to sew the jacket or add the binding, and the results look fantastic.
S absolutely loves her new trench coat. She’s been eagerly waiting for a rainy day so she could wear it along with her new rain boots. Rainy days aren’t exactly common here in Madrid, but last week we finally had a sprinkle of rain in the morning. She got ready for school faster than ever before so she could put her new gear to use. I managed to snap a quick picture of her on our way to school.
