weekend links: tour de france edition

Bonjour! When Liesl mentioned her upcoming trip to southern France in August, it reminded me of my own years living in France. I was lucky enough to explore most of the country, and I thought I'd share some of my favorite spots if you happen to visit "The Hexagon" sometime. France tops the charts as the world's most visited country, and rightly so—each region has its own charm, offering something unique for everyone. So pack your bags and let’s dive into some hidden gems together! One of my favorite memories is touring the La Toile de Jouy Museum in Jouay-en-Josas, just west of Paris. Nestled inside a charming chateau, this museum showcases the history and craftsmanship of this iconic French fabric. While you might not find rolls of it during your travels, the boutique offers beautifully crafted items inspired by these classic monochrome prints. Last year marked the bicentennial of Oberkampf, the birthplace of this fabric, so it’s definitely worth revisiting once you're back home. Next on my wishlist is a visit to the Christian Dior Museum in Granville. Set in the designer's childhood home—a striking pink building—it’s easy to see how the color influenced his work. I've always been drawn to that shade of pink, and it seems Normandy shares my sentiment. Be sure to also check out Claude Monet’s house and gardens in Giverny. Strolling through those vibrant blooms is a sensory experience like no other. After exploring the pink granite coastline of northern Brittany, take a ferry to the picturesque Ile de Brehat, a tranquil island free of cars. It’s perfect for a peaceful retreat. While in Brittany, pick up a classic yellow raincoat by Guy Cotten for the little ones. These coats are both stylish and functional, and they’ve become a staple in my family wardrobe. There’s something magical about cobblestone streets in medieval towns. Pérouges, Cordes sur Ciel (with its stunning panoramic views), and the awe-inspiring Carcassonne are must-sees. Each city tells a story of France’s rich history. If you venture to Provence, don’t miss the Lavender Museum. The boutique there stocks everything lavender imaginable! Nearby, an Olive Oil Mill offers products ranging from olive tree wood crafts to artisanal soaps. For thrill-seekers, the Grand Canyon of Verdon is a natural wonder not to be missed. Its turquoise waters and white limestone cliffs create a jaw-dropping landscape. Here are a few more quick tips: - Stop in Cassis for breathtaking Mediterranean vistas. - Wander through the quaint streets of Salon-de-Provence. - History buffs will adore strolling through Vieux Lyon. - The lace museum in Alençon sounds fascinating. - Cassoulet lovers, indulge while you’re there—I’ll live vicariously! - And if you have a sweet tooth, try La Maison du Chocolat for decadent dark chocolate with orange and cinnamon. Bon voyage! And remember to send me a postcard! Until then, may your travels be filled with discovery and wonder. Warm regards, [Your Name]
