Bonjour!
When Liesl mentioned her upcoming trip to southern France in August, it brought back memories of my own years living in France. I was lucky enough to explore nearly every corner of the country and I'd love to share some of my favorite spots if you ever find yourself in "The Hexagon."
France consistently tops the charts as the world's number one tourist destination, and rightly so—each region offers something unique, ensuring there's something for everyone. Pack your bags and let's dive into the charm of this beautiful country!
One of my most memorable experiences was visiting the La Toile de Jouy Museum in Jouay-en-Josas, a western suburb of Paris. This chateau-turned-museum is a treasure trove of history and showcases the iconic French fabric known for its monochromatic country scenes. They celebrated Oberkampf's bicentennial last year, adding even more significance to this cultural gem. While you're there, keep an eye out for any special editions or limited releases—they’re perfect souvenirs to bring back home.
Next up, I'm eager to visit the Christian Dior Museum in Granville. Located in the designer's childhood home, the building itself is painted pink—a nod to the influence this hue had on him. The museum promises a deep dive into the legacy of one of fashion's greatest icons.
Interestingly, pink houses seem to be quite the trend in Normandy. If you're in the area, don't miss out on visiting Claude Monet's house and gardens in Giverny. As you wander through the lush floral paths, take a moment to savor the scents that cannot be captured in photographs online.
After driving along the stunning pink granite coastline of northern Brittany, hop on a boat to reach the picturesque Île de Bréhat. This small car-free island offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
If you're visiting Brittany, consider picking up a classic yellow raincoat by Guy Cotten for the kids. These coats are practical and stylish, and trust me, they look absolutely adorable on children.
There’s something enchanting about medieval walled cities with their cobblestone pathways. My top picks for exploring these historic gems are Pérouges, Cordes-sur-Ciel (the view from the top is breathtaking!), and the magnificent Carcassonne. Stepping into these ancient towns feels like stepping back in time.
For those heading to Provence who adore lavender, a visit to the Lavender Museum is a must. The boutique inside offers everything lavender imaginable—from essential oils to soaps and even lavender-infused snacks. Nearby, you'll also find an Olive Oil Mill where you can pick up local specialties like black olives, olive wood crafts, and olive oil soaps.
Feeling adventurous? A hike along the Grand Canyon of Verdon is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in nature. The turquoise-green waters contrasting against the white limestone create an unforgettable landscape that’s truly a hidden gem.
